However, in the manner Playmobil copied from Legos and missed their mark, they sloppily repeat it with this cinematic adaptation copycat. Like an overly long commercial for the product it's based on, the dialogue and emotional content seem to be pulled from the mind of a young child. Recent high school graduate Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy) has always longed to travel the world. But she's torn between that and the obligation to take care of her younger brother Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) as he's the only family she has left, after their parents die in a car accident. Charlie helps make that travel decision for Marla when he runs away to a toy fair with his sister chasing behind him. As a result, they are inexplicably warped into the animated world of Playmobil, where they're turned into their favorite Playmobil figurines. Unfortunately, in this new animated place, the evil Emperor Maximus (Adam Lambert) rules over his eclectic subjects with an iron fist. When he takes Charlie prisoner, Marla is forced to make new friends and enlist their help in saving her little brother so they can get back to their real world. Providing comic relief is Del (Jim Gaffigan) the food truck delivery driver, who is anxious to do his part to help solve a mystery that secret agent Rex Dasher (Daniel Radcliffe) is trying to investigate. There are Playmobil people vanishing mysteriously, and an evil organization is behind it. If the first plot wasn't enough, there are then two concurrent plots unraveling quickly at the same time. Marla jumps in as a Playmobil civilian to help Rex Dasher and Del solve the mystery, while they in turn try to help her find her brother. First time director Lino DiSalvo, who made his mark in the animation department working on Frozen and Tangled, is faced with a major issue: with so little story to tell, how can he best tell it? The separated sibling plot itself, while theoretically solid, quickly devolves into one-liners which are meant to string together a series of sketches, designed to inundate more young people into the world of Playmobil figures. For the most part, these wisecracks fall flat. The most confusing problem is that it's never clear exactly whose story is being told. While an obvious reason for the movie is to hype the product, it's also a sad one, because there's a lot of talent voicing the characters, and the animation is quite crisp, clean, and beautiful. In more competent hands this film could have hit the right notes, brought the laughs, and lifted Playmobil from out of obscurity, and back into modern consciousness. But it doesn't. Playmobil: The Movie runs out of good material in the trailer, so the 110-minute runtime drags. Ultimately, the film might be less entertaining than visiting a toy store for two hours, looking at all the boxes of Playmobil action sets, and thinking about playing with them.
